Missing AirAsia flight: Body found, relatives distraught with grief

JAKARTA: Relatives of the 162 people missing on the plane hugged each other and burst into tears in Surabaya, where the missing Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 plane departed from, as they watched footage showing a body floating in the sea on a television feed of a press conference in Jakarta.

A body was found in the sea Tuesday during the search for missing Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501, Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) chief F.H. Bambang Soelistyo said.

"At 13:25... we spotted a floating object believed to be one of the passengers' bodies," Soelistyo said at a press conference.

Relatives hugged one another and continued crying until an AirAsia officer shouted, "This is crazy", an AFP journalist at the scene said.

The situation at the centre was tense and emotional, with some hysterical and crying non-stop.

AirAsia X flies into greater turbulence

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X Bhd ( Financial Dashboard), the long-haul, low-cost affiliate of AirAsia Bhd, appears to be encountering greater turbulence. It is said to be facing payment problems relating to staff salaries and their fixed and variable allowances, sources close to the company said.

In view of the financial problems, according to the sources, AirAsia co-founder and group chief executive officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes will take on a “more prominent role” in the management of AirAsia X to revive the airline.

In a circular seen by The Edge Financial Daily, AirAsia X staff were informed that payment of their wages and allowances would be on a staggered basis for the month of October.

It is understood that Fernandes wants AirAsia X to stop its chartered airline services catering to groups of business travellers and instead focus on its scheduled flights.The circular stated that basic salary, fixed allowance, productivity allowance and overtime would be paid on Oct 24, while variable allowances such as flying allowance, sector allowance, night stop allowance and commission would be paid on Oct 31.

Posting allowances for charter flights will be paid on Nov 5.

Describing the unprecedented payment issue as a “temporary setback”, the management of AirAsia X blamed the payment delay to the “late arrival of incoming funds”.

A source told The Edge Financial Daily that apart from the staff payment issue, AirAsia X is also having difficulty seeking aircraft loans from financial institutions due to its current financial position.

Female pilots start flying high in Singapore

SINGAPORE: Sitting in a cockpit and piloting an aeroplane may not be the first option for many women, but a small number of them are leading Singapore's aviation industry.

One such trailblazer is First Officer Vanessa Khaw, who is one of Tigerair’s 16 female pilots. A former stewardess, piloting a commercial jet was never part of her career plan. It was her former colleagues who first suggested she become a pilot.

Ms Khaw recounted: "I was quite incredulous and said, ‘Are you crazy? Do female pilots actually fly?’ I was not even open to the idea because all these years, I have not been exposed to anyone who is flying, let alone females.

"So I did some research and I actually found a flying school in Johor Bahru in Senai airport. I signed up and I went for my first flight and after that I never looked back.”

But it has not been an easy road. The 30-year-old underwent one-and-a-half years of intensive aviation training.

Ms Khaw and her fellow female pilots make up 6 per cent of all pilots in Singapore. They all work for SilkAir, Jetstar Asia, Scoot and Tigerair. Currently, Singapore Airlines does not have any female pilots, even though a spokesperson from the national carrier said it does not have a policy against their recruitment.

Figures from the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore show that the number of pilots in Singapore has remained consistent over the past few years. The ratio of male to female pilots has also not changed very much. Currently, there are only 27 women pilots and more than half of them work at Tigerair.

• Rated Captains
• Must hold a valid ATPL license acceptable to Malaysian DCA
• Must have at least 3000 flying hours with 1000 hours PIC on type
• Minimum of Level 4 of Aviation English.
• Good command of English, both written and spoken.
• Class 1 medical

Benefits :

• Salary of USD 9,000 nett tax free per month
• Roster of 6 weeks ON and 2 weeks OFF
• 28 Annual leave per year
• 2 years renewable contract

Airbus A320, ATR 42/72 and Boeing 737 Type Rating - ETOPS

ETOPS offers Type rating training to airline and self-sponsored pilots on Airbus A320, ATR 42/72 and Boeing 737 aircraft types.

ETOPS’ courses combine a two phase ground-school, covering aircraft systems and operational procedures, and a simulator phase mostly using full flight simulators through our approved training centers network.

The classrooms are equipped with all devices necessary for professional instruction. This includes Computer Based Training (CBT) equipment, cockpit panels and a Virtual Procedure Trainer (VPT) which combines courseware with simulation to actively engage students in the learning process.

Theory, practice, technical details, operational issues and human factors are brought together in a realistic environment.

ETOPS is approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)

The theoretical phase takes place at ETOPS facilities and the simulator sessions are delivered at ATR Training Center, both locations are in Toulouse, France. The base training on real aircraft will be done within an airline in Europe.
