Malindo and Lion to absorb 600 unemployed pilots, hire up to 1,200 in five years

Finally some good news to a growing number of unemployed pilots. Malindo Air and Lion Air will hire more than 600 pilots from Malaysia for its operations over the next few months to years while its rivals are only hiring between 50 and 100 a year.

That's not all. According to PT Lion Grup president director Rusdi Kirana, the group has the capacity to absorb many more pilots and it can even hire up to 1,000 over the next five years.

“With all the aircraft orders that we have made, we certainly need pilots. It is not empty promises, it is real. We need pilots but it also depends on the pilots. They must have good skills, knowledge and the right attitude (before we can hire them),” he says in an interview with StarBizWeek.

He adds that “we are growing and we have placed an order for 381 new aircraft and that means we need pilots. And we are also thinking of ordering more aircraft.”

SilkAir Finalize Order For 54 737s

SilkAir’s order for 23 737-800s and 31 737 MAX 8s is the largest order in the airline’s history and begins a fleet transition to Boeing airplanes.

"The capability of the 737s will enable us to spread our wings to even more destinations and increase capacity on existing routes," said SilkAir Chief Executive Leslie Thng in a statement from Singapore recently.

Emirates first half net profit up 104%

DUBAI, UAE – 12 November 2012 - The Emirates Group today announced its half yearly results which remain robust despite continued global economic pressure and continued high fuel prices. The Emirates Group posted a AED 2.1 billion (US$ 575 million) net profit for the first six months of its current fiscal year ending 30th September 2012, up 68 per cent from AED 1.3 billion (US$ 343 million) from 30th September 2011.

Despite fundamental challenges, the Group’s revenue and other operating income rose to AED 38.2 billion (US$ 10.4 billion) an increase of 16 per cent over the last year’s results. This constitutes the first time in the Group’s history that revenue surpassed the US$ 10 billion mark in a six month period. The Group’s cash position on 30th September 2012 remained strong at AED 15.2 billion (US$ 4.1 billion), compared to AED 17.6 billion (US$ 4.8 billion) as of March end 2012. The AED 2.4 billion difference in the cash balance is primarily resulting from a AED 2.0 billion Sukuk bond repayment in June 2012.

Malindo Airways, to hire 50% of unemployed pilots

PETALING JAYA: Malindo Air is set to at least halve Malaysia's problem of unemployed pilots.
The country's newest low-cost airline and its partner Lion Air will absorb all the 600-odd pilots who turned up for the walk-in interview at the KL International Airport yesterday.
And they might take more with further interviews planned for today and tomorrow, according to Malindo Air chief executive officer Chandran Ramamuthy.

He told The Star: “We will take all of them (who turned up yesterday) and more pilots provided they meet all our requirements which include them passing our entrance examinations and meeting Department of Civil Aviation regulations.

“We will take them within a year. The timing is subject to availability of our instructors and simulator. We intend to position one simulator in Kuala Lumpur early next year.”

Pilot grads urged to spread their wings

JUNIOR pilots in Malaysia are still dreaming of their pie in the sky despite a glut of rookies in their profession.

Industry players point out these rookies believe they can earn big bucks from commercial airlines immediately after graduation.

However, the reality is most of them will end up not being able to follow their dreams due to limited intake from local airlines for fresh graduates.

Currently, there are five flying schools in the country, churning out about 300 graduates annually. Junior pilots graduate with 200 hours under their belt, enabling them to only fly small aircrafts below 5,700kg.

Applicants need to meet a minimum standard

BOTH Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and AirAsia run cadet pilot training programmes with MAS recruiting more than 100 cadets annually.

However, according to MAS director of operations, Capt Izham Ismail, the programme has been stopped recently though he gave no reason for this.

“Yes, a large number of applicants used to apply for this training programme and on completion of training, they were absorbed by MAS. The duration of the programme is between 18 and 24 months. We bore the costs initially but the cadet had to pay back through salary deductions once employed,” he says.

Pilots come down to earth

Young, jobless pilots are scrambling to make ends meet with the current glut in pilots.

SINCE he was six, S. Nathan has harboured the dream of becoming a pilot. It was an arduous journey to materialise his ambition but he made it. His parents were not affluent so he scrimped, saved, worked, invested in shares and sought ways to increase his education fund. Finally, he sold his car, took a loan and with additional funding from his family, enrolled in a flying school in Malacca in 2007.

After investing nearly RM250,000 in his studies, Nathan graduated top of his class in 2009 and earned himself a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). No one could have been prouder than his labourer parents. But three years on, he's still struggling to find employment.

Scoot to buy 20 Boeing 787s – flights from 2014

Singapore Airline's low-cost offshoot Scoot will make the Boeing 787 Dreamliner the backbone of its fleet, with 20 of the next-gen jets on order for delivery starting 2014.
Scoot will adopt the stretched 787-9 version, which with Scoot's two class layout of ScootBiz business class and economy will see the seat tally blast past the 300 mark.
The 20 aircraft, originally ordered by parent Singapore Airlines, list at US$243m each, represent a staggering US$4.86bn investment by the startup at official prices (although no airline ever pays the full sticker price).

SIA freezes hiring of cadet pilots amid business slowdown

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has frozen cadet-pilot recruitment and cut flying hours for junior pilots amid a business slowdown that has led to a manpower surplus.

The last cadet intake was early this year and it has not been decided when hiring will resume, SIA spokesman Nicholas Ionides told The Straits Times. He did not say how many were recruited during the last exercise, but noted that it was a smaller number than in previous years. The usual is about 120 a year.

SIA, which has about 2,400 pilots, last suspended hiring of cadet pilots in 2009 following the global financial crisis. The current slowdown, which caused full-year profits for the 12 months to end-March to dive 69 per cent to $336 million, is also affecting those already flying.

AirAsia ditches plan to buy Batavia Air

JAKARTA, Oct 11 — Budget carrier AirAsia Bhd and Indonesian ally PT Fersindo Nusaperkasa are not buying PT Batavia Air now as all parties have failed to reach an agreement, Dow Jones Newswires quoted the Indonesian domestic airline as saying today.

“We will continue to seek strategic partners to develop our business,” Batavia Air chief executive director Yudiawan Tansari told Dow Jones.

The newswire reported that Tansari declined to specify whether they failed to reach an agreement on the value of Batavia Air.

AirAsia, Asia’s largest budget airline by fleet size, announced in July a planned purchase of a 49 per cent stake in Batavia Air, while Fersindo would buy the remaining 51 per cent to comply with Indonesian laws. The companies were expected to pay a total of US$80 million (RM248 million) for Batavia Air.

Ron Akana retires from 63-year career as United Flight Attendant

In 1949, when Ron Akana responded to a United Airlines want ad in the Honolulu newspaper, he and his friends weren't even sure what a "steward" was.

Sixty-three years later, Akana, who will turn 84 on Sept. 8, is making his last flight with the airline, wrapping up a career that earned him a spot in Guinness World Records as the longest-tenured flight attendant in U.S. history.

Fittingly, the Honolulu native will serve as the crew chief for a flight back to his hometown, with his wife, son John, daughter Jean, also a United flight attendant, and grandson Kyle, joining him on board. When he comes back to Denver International Airport on Monday, he'll fly as a passenger.

Garuda Looks Overseas for Pilots as Jet Buys Boost Need for More Talent

Abandoning its earlier stance, Garuda Indonesia is turning to foreign talent to fly its jets as part of efforts to expand its global reach, an official said on Wednesday.

Pujobroto, a Garuda spokesman, said that as the airline wanted to add more jets to serve its regional and international routes, it needed more pilots to fly its planes.

“In line with our plans to expand our fleet to 194 planes from 94 planes currently, Garuda is recruiting pilots from several flying schools or those who already applied to work with us,” he told the Jakarta Globe.
