Malindo and Lion to absorb 600 unemployed pilots, hire up to 1,200 in five years

Finally some good news to a growing number of unemployed pilots. Malindo Air and Lion Air will hire more than 600 pilots from Malaysia for its operations over the next few months to years while its rivals are only hiring between 50 and 100 a year.

That's not all. According to PT Lion Grup president director Rusdi Kirana, the group has the capacity to absorb many more pilots and it can even hire up to 1,000 over the next five years.

“With all the aircraft orders that we have made, we certainly need pilots. It is not empty promises, it is real. We need pilots but it also depends on the pilots. They must have good skills, knowledge and the right attitude (before we can hire them),” he says in an interview with StarBizWeek.

He adds that “we are growing and we have placed an order for 381 new aircraft and that means we need pilots. And we are also thinking of ordering more aircraft.”

SilkAir Finalize Order For 54 737s

Boeing and SilkAir have finalized an order for 54 Next-Generation 737s and 737 MAX 8s worth US$4.9 billion at list prices.

SilkAir’s order for 23 737-800s and 31 737 MAX 8s is the largest order in the airline’s history and begins a fleet transition to Boeing airplanes.

Emirates first half net profit up 104%

DUBAI, UAE – 12 November 2012 - The Emirates Group today announced its half yearly results which remain robust despite continued global economic pressure and continued high fuel prices. The Emirates Group posted a AED 2.1 billion (US$ 575 million) net profit for the first six months of its current fiscal year ending 30th September 2012, up 68 per cent from AED 1.3 billion (US$ 343 million) from 30th September 2011.

Despite fundamental challenges, the Group’s revenue and other operating income rose to AED 38.2 billion (US$ 10.4 billion) an increase of 16 per cent over the last year’s results. This constitutes the first time in the Group’s history that revenue surpassed the US$ 10 billion mark in a six month period. The Group’s cash position on 30th September 2012 remained strong at AED 15.2 billion (US$ 4.1 billion), compared to AED 17.6 billion (US$ 4.8 billion) as of March end 2012. The AED 2.4 billion difference in the cash balance is primarily resulting from a AED 2.0 billion Sukuk bond repayment in June 2012.

Malindo Airways, to hire 50% of unemployed pilots

PETALING JAYA: Malindo Air is set to at least halve Malaysia's problem of unemployed pilots.
The country's newest low-cost airline and its partner Lion Air will absorb all the 600-odd pilots who turned up for the walk-in interview at the KL International Airport yesterday.
And they might take more with further interviews planned for today and tomorrow, according to Malindo Air chief executive officer Chandran Ramamuthy.

He told The Star: “We will take all of them (who turned up yesterday) and more pilots provided they meet all our requirements which include them passing our entrance examinations and meeting Department of Civil Aviation regulations.

“We will take them within a year. The timing is subject to availability of our instructors and simulator. We intend to position one simulator in Kuala Lumpur early next year.”
