The first Airbus 380 for Malaysia Airlines

PETALING JAYA: Almost a decade after it was first ordered, the world’s largest and fuel-efficient A380 aircraft finally landed on Malaysian soil at 3.35pm yesterday.

Indonesia’s Lion Air nears Dreamliner deal

SINGAPORE: Indonesia’s Lion Air is close to signing a deal for 10 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner passenger jets, with a total list price of US$1.9bil, as the budget carrier aims to tap the long-haul market.

Two sources involved in the deal said that Lion Air preferred the newer carbon-composite Boeing Dreamliner over the Airbus A330.

The deal is expected to be signed in Jakarta on June 8 as Lion Air celebrates its 12th anniversary.
Such a move by Lion Air would put more pressure on Garuda Indonesia Tbk and AirAsia Bhd because it would be able to serve a broader range of destinations.

AirAsia to start Singapore hub soon, widening its network

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — AirAsia has received Singapore’s approval to start a hub in the island republic soon, say sources, allowing the Malaysian airline to expand its network in the growing regional low-cost market segment just a week after Putrajaya aborted its share swap with loss-making Malaysia Airlines (MAS).

The Malaysian Insider understands that Singapore has informed AirAsia it will get an air operator’s certificate (AOC) as soon as possible, ending years of lobbying by Asia’s biggest low-cost carrier to set up operations in the city-state, a leading Asian financial centre.

“Singapore has agreed in principle to issue the AOC. It will be issued soon,” an industry source told The Malaysian Insider.
