Life as a Malaysia Airlines Cabin Crew

So you see them walking across the airport gracefully in their elegant kebayas, their black leather heels polished until it shines, their hair in a high chignon and their face all dolled up in a classy yet beautiful manner. They have their handbag on one arm and the other is dragging their trolley bag behind. You stare at them as they past, wishing and wondering for one second, how it would be like to be a Malaysia Airlines stewardess.

Well, today I am here to give you a private and exclusive glance into the daily life as a cabin crew for MAS. Do note that I have been working with MAS for almost one year, and I only fly narrow-body, which is the Boeing 737 aircraft. Therefore, I cannot tell you how the roster of a wide-body crew is going to be like. But don’t worry because it is almost the same, it’s just that they have longer flights and a bigger aircraft.

So after going through three months of solid training, you will graduate and leave the academy as a full-fledged cabin crew. You will be under 3 months of probation and you will have to return to the academy after 3 months to complete your proficiency test. New cabin crews are bonded to the airline for 2 years, failing which you choose to leave or you get terminated before the bond is over, you will have to pay a sum of 20k.

I graduated from the academy in June 2013. I got my first roster and I was so excited. My first flight was a turnaround flight from Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Pudong (Shanghai) and back. However, due to extreme weather conditions we had to divert and land in Hong Kong. Needless to say, I was jumping with joy when they announced we were going to have an unscheduled nightstop in Hong Kong.

The next day we would fly to Pudong and back to BKI again. It was more than our assigned flying hours so we got to pax back to KUL which is our base. Paxing back means travelling back as a passenger.

So basically this is how an average roster will be. In a month, you will have at least 5 turnaround flights. It could be a mix of long haul or short haul flights. You will have at least 5 nightstops as well, more to local compared to international. International nightstops will vary every month so within one year you would have got the chance to cover all the 737 destinations.

The furthest we fly to is Narita, Japan and Perth and Darwin, Australia. We also have local nightstops such as BKI, KCH, PEN, KBR, JHB and KUA. Nightstops in Hong Kong, Kathmandu and Australia bring in a lot of money so if you get those often, you’re lucky.

We have a minimum of 8 days off per month and sometimes it could go to 12-13 days off. So your allowance will not be the same. It could be higher this month and lower next month. Your basic as a new recruit will be RM1200.

Allowances consist of turnaround allowance, laundry allowance, meal allowance, nightstop allowance and much more.  So in a month you would probably get an average of RM3000-RM4000 just as allowances only. Of course, there will be SOCSO, insurance, EPF and all this payments so they will cut around rm500 there. We are entitled to 21 days of annual leave but that doesn’t mean we will get it each time we apply. It depends on your luck, reason of leave and seniority as well.

Emirates Cabin Crew Interview Process & Stages ( Updated Version - 2015 )

Follow me on Twitter at Flygosh@Twitter
I'm going to share the interview process that I have recently attended at the Emirates recruitment event held in Malaysia. I believe that there are a lot of Emirates girl/boy wannabe who would love to read this article because Emirates has somehow changed their procedure in recruiting candidates in the year {2015} as compared to the past few years.

Please bare with me with the wordy article but I believe it will help those who are interested in joining Emirates with some updated information :)

{Day 1} - Open day (CV submission + Group discussion)

YES. They have a group discussion on the first day itself. Would be good to prepare and get yourself ready since like everyone else, I thought all I need to do on the first day of the open day is just to submit my cv, go home and wait for the call. NO.

Emirates no longer does this and what you need to do is stay back and wait for them to paste a list of successful candidates on the wall. If you pass, you will then proceed to the group discussion stage.

Now we will look into the things that you would need to prepare for the open day:

(a) Always remember to put on a smile the moment you step into the hotel. Make sure you have all the required documents ready too and put them nicely in a file for easy retrieval. You wouldn't know if there are any observer hiding around, so my advice is not to be stingy on giving out your friendly smile to everyone. On the other hand, the documents that they need for open day will be the following three things:

-one photo (passport size OR full length)
-updated resume (without cover letter it's fine)
-a form (you will get it at the entrance of event hall and you need to fill out your basic info & online reference number)

(b) Make some new friends around. I know a lot of you would like to stick to your own group but hey why not just connect and get to know new friends? If you get selected for the Emirates cabin crew position, most of the time, you will be flying with different set of crews, so it is important that you have great social skills.

Cathay Pacific Flight Attendant ( Singapore Base ) - Interview stages and Process

Cathay Pacific recently held their invite-only interview session at Crowne Plaza Hotel for Singapore based crew, and I was the few who got lucky to get selected. I personally feel that they are rather low-keyed; there weren’t any advertisements about this recruitment, and i only got to know about it through flygosh. Thanks flygosh!

Okay so I applied via email as per their instructions, sent a CV and cover letter, and few days after the date of closing of the application, I received an email stating to attend their first interview session.

1st Interview:  It’s in a meeting room in the hotel, and I was rather surprised by the number of people attending, only about 20 attended. But I wasn't sure if there were other first interview sessions. So I proceeded to registration counter, took a name tag, and first they did was to measure the arm reach.

They mentioned height isn't important, but rather whether you can reach the height stated is more important, which is rather true. You can be 165 tall but you have shorter hands, or you can be 156 tall but have longer hands. But either way, I passed, and went into the room. It was a banquet seating, so there’s a quilted table with chairs around it.

First it was a brief introduction of Cathay Pacific and working environment of Singapore based crew. And followed by the REAL assessment. Each table were given strips of paper containing a topic, and everyone had to choose one, stand up and talk about the topic you chose, and basically entertain everyone with your presentation skills. Similar to show and tell?

With a 1 minute limit. This was more of a warm up session, but they are STILL assessing you.
Next was a group work. Naturally every table forms a group itself, and each table given a scenario and questions, and within the group, we had to either come up with solutions/conclusions/answers etc depending on which scenario you got.

We were also given flipcharts and markers, and within 10 minutes, we had to sort everything we want to share among ourselves. That’s a challenge, 10 minutes is quite short, but the longer it is, the more expectations they have of us. In this phase, I noticed the assessors weren't looking much at us, so I guess they are focusing more of the presentation part. Either way, 10minutes was up, and everyone shared a bit of what their group discussed, and that was the assessment.
