Ending World’s Longest Nonstop Flight Adds Five Hours - SIA

The inaugural Singapore-Newark noon-stop flight The end of the world’s longest nonstop commercial flight, a 19-hour slog between Singapore and New York, is bad news for Chia Teck Fatt.

Passengers like Chia who are used to making the 9,000-nautical mile journey from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey, will instead fly to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport via Frankfurt starting next month, adding five hours to their journeys.

Singapore Airlines Ltd. (SIA) is stopping its services from Singapore to Newark with its all-business class four-engine Airbus SAS A340-500 after ending the second-longest flight from Los Angeles to the island city yesterday.

“I’m looking for another way to travel to New York,” said Chia, after checking-in at the business-class lounge at Singapore’s Changi Airport dressed in casual pants, t-shirt, a jacket and loafers.

With oil prices tripling in the last decade, the carrier struggled to ferry executives on the 100-seat flights profitably for the past nine years, a sign that the airline industry is once again putting profitability ahead of glamor. The iconic transatlantic flights with the supersonic Concorde were scrapped a decade ago. The shrinking of Wall Street firms and travel cutbacks after the global financial crisis have made it difficult for airlines to lure top-dollar clients.

“It didn’t make sense to continue,” said Siyi Lim, a Singapore-based investment analyst at OCBC Investment Research. “The plane burns a lot of fuel, but carries very few passengers,” he said about the Airbus A340-500 aircraft.

The " not so " glamorous cabin crew life

Nope, this post is not about the supposed "Glamorous Cabin Crew Life".  Rather it is to offer you a glimpse beyond that image. Being a cabin crew is a dream job to many, it definitely has been dream come true for me. Did I complain about the job back then? Of course I did, who doesn't ever complain about their job? At the end of the day,  it is still a fabulous job though not a perfect one. I would have continued flying if not for a family incident that required me to not be out-stationed so many days a month.

Many aspiring cabin crews often do research on how to pass the interview but few fail to find out  if the job is what they have in mind.  Even though I am giving coaching on passing the cabin crew interview, I am not about to only mention the good about being a cabin crew while glossing over the others. This is because as I have mentioned previously, you will be bonded to the company once you are accepted. That's 4 months of training plus 18 months of flying.

Add to that the interview and waiting time and it is about 2 years of your life. A long time to waste if you found out later that you hate the job. I have met cabin crew who absolutely hated the guts of the job and it was miserable having to report for their next flight. Overtime, the perks could no longer cheer them up and they get so weighted down by the cons it's pretty hard to watch. So while you prepare for the dream job of your life, take a little time out to consider the following points as well.

1. You will get homesick. More so if you are someone who loves spending time with your family. A cabin crew has plenty of off days but remember that some of these is spent while out-stationed. You will have about 10-15 days a month in Singapore depending on your roster. Will that be alright with you? Don't just think about the first few months. Think long run, month in month out.

New Rule for foreign pilots - Indonesian DGCA

Click thumbnail to view
What this means is that they will no longer issue Indonesian CPL for foreign pilots and according to the circular above, it's mainly because of foreign pilots faking their flying hours.

However, you may fly via validation on your " mother license " so long it's current and valid.

Govt Tightens Foreign Pilot Regulations

The Ministry of Transportation has issued a circular to limit the number of foreign pilots in the country, a move that the ministry said was aimed to provide more opportunities for local pilots to fill vacancies in the lucrative aviation industry.

The ministry also made the move after it found several foreign pilots forging reports about their flight hours.

“So, the number of flight hours was actually lower than what they reported,” Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang S. Ervan was quoted as saying by Tempo on Friday.

However, Bambang refused to reveal the names of the airlines that hired foreign pilots who faked flight-hour documentation. He did however add that it was likely the pilots forged documents to accelerate the process of becoming pilots in command.

Under Indonesian regulations, a pilot can become a PIC after 1,000 hours of flying and a co-pilot must have 250 hours flying experience.

“But we make selections. Only those with experience can obtain an Indonesian license,” he said, adding that Indonesia needs foreign pilots but saying the country only had about 600 foreign pilots out of a total of 7,000.

Garuda Indonesia and AirAsia declined to comment on the government’s plan to curb the issuance of PIC licenses to foreign pilots, saying they had not received the circular.

“I have to study the circular first,” said Pujobroto, Garuda Indonesia’s vice president of corporate communications.

KOTA KINABALU: Six people are believed to be injured when a Twin Otter aircraft belonging to MASWings, made an emergency landing in Kudat at about 3.30pm.

Police said the aircraft which was carrying 16 people, appeared to have overshot the runway and ended up near a vacant house in the nearby Kampung Sin-San.

Sources said that six people -  four including the pilot were seriously injured.

However, Malaysia Airlines in a Press statement later confirmed that it was their aircraft - DHC6 9M-MDM MH3002 operating from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat which was involved in the 2.50pm incident.

"The aircraft landed short of the runway in Kudat."

"No reported fatalities as of now. Focus of the airline is on the rescue of the passengers and crew."
"We will continue to monitor the situation at the crash site and update the situation," it said.

Meanwhile,   Bernama reported two of the passengers were seriously injured in the crash in Kudat, about 150 kilometres northeast of this state capital.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohd Affendy Ramin said the plane, which was carrying 16 people including the pilot, crashed in Kampung Sinsan.

"We received an emergency call at 2.54 pm and a rescue team consisting of 11 personnel were at the scene in 21 minutes.

"All 16 people on board were brought out of the plane and sent to the Kudat Hospital for medical examination," he told Bernama.

Malaysia to host famed Red Bull air race for first time

Putrajaya is one of seven new locations to stage a leg of the Red Bull Air Race World Championships next year.

FOR the first time ever, Malaysia will be hosting a leg of the Red Bull Air Race World Championships, the world’s premier low-level acrobatics flight race competition.

Putrajaya was announced as the site for the second leg of the 2014 Championships at the launch of the event at the Putrajaya Marina today. The Championships will kick off in February.

Red Bull Air Race GmbH chief executive officer Erich Wolf described the nation’s administrative capital as having a “very impressive background, and a very modern city, which fits with our brand”.
Returning after a three-year hiatus, the flight competition will be held at seven new locations, with only Abu Dhabi retained as the starting leg from previous editions.

The seven are Putrajaya; Gdynia, Poland; Ascot, Britain; Dallas and Fort Worth in Texas, United States; Las Vegas in Nevada, US; and an as-yet-undetermined city in China.

With safety and reorganisation being the key factors in the Championships’ long break, Red Bull Air Race Head of Aviation Sergio Plá announced that next year will also see new safety features in place.
This includes extending the height of the pylons the pilots must fly between by five metres, and ensuring that all competitors use the same type of engine.

A Challenger race is also being introduced as a compulsory step for pilots who wish to compete in the Championships proper.

Plá said that this race would be an easier version of the Championships race, to test pilots for their ability and readiness to join the Championships proper.

“The pilots who pass this race will be able to join the Championships once a competitor decides to stop flying or not participate,” he said.

Twelve former participants of the Championships will be returning to compete in the 2014 air race, including previous champions Peter Besenyei, Paul Bonhomme and Kirby Chambliss.
