SIA To Order US$17 Billion Worth Of Aircraft From Airbus & Boeing

Singapore Airlines has agreed to order 30 more Airbus A350-900s and 30 Boeing 787-10Xs in deals valued at more than US$17 billion.

The agreement with Airbus comprises 30 firm-ordered A350-900s for delivery from the 2016/17 financial year, plus options for 20 more. The options may be converted into firm orders for larger A350-1000s.

The agreement with Boeing comprises 30 firm-ordered B787-10Xs for delivery from the 2018/19 financial year. It is conditional upon Boeing formally launching the B787-10X programme.

“Today’s aircraft orders are among the biggest in Singapore Airlines’ history, helping to ensure that we retain our industry leading position. They demonstrate our commitment to the Singapore hub and our confidence in the future for premium full-service travel,” said Singapore Airlines CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong.

“These new aircraft will provide opportunities to grow and renew our fleet and enhance our network, benefiting customers by offering more travel options and the latest in-flight cabin products.”

Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB is the sole engine type for the A350-900. An engine selection for the B787-10Xs will be made at a later date.

The agreement with Airbus is Singapore Airlines’ third for A350-900s, lifting to 70 the number of firm orders in place for the aircraft type. They are intended for use on medium and long-range routes.

The B787-10Xs are intended for use on medium-range routes.

The new orders will lift to 126 the number of firm aircraft commitments Singapore Airlines has in place with Airbus and Boeing.

Malindo to begin services from SkyPark terminal in Subang by mid-June

PETALING JAYA: Malindo Air, which is due to take delivery of its first turboprop aircraft by the middle of this month, should begin services from the SkyPark terminal in Subang by mid-June, if it gets the necessary approvals.

The plan is to use Subang as a feeder hub for its jet operations anchored at the KL International Airport (KLIA). It would initially have at least half a dozen turboprops to ply domestic routes and destinations in southern Thailand and northern Sumatra.

“Any route that falls within the two-hour flying radius would be operated from Subang, while anything beyond that would be operated by its jet operations from KLIA,” a source said.

Approvals are expected at the end of May, while ticket sales will open in early June.
