AirAsia X to buy 25 more A330-300S for US$6 billion

PARIS: AirAsia X, the long-haul, low-fare affiliate of AirAsia Group, has placed the largest single airline firm orders for 25 more A330-300s with Airbus valued at US$6 billion.

These increase AirAsia X’s orders to 51 from Airbus, supplemented by orders of six A330-300s leased from the International Lease Finance Corp, bringing its total confirmed fleet deliveries to 57 by 2019.

AirAsia X will start taking delivery of its A330-300s in 2015 as it begins a major expansion of its network across Asia-Pacific.

The new orders include the latest extended range versions of the A330-300, providing the carrier with the ability to offer non-stop services to destinations in Europe or one-stop services to the US.

Co-founder/Director of AirAsia X, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, said the orders showed the company's firm intent to dominate the long-haul, low-cost carrier space.

"Our commitment would allow us to remain as the youngest wide-bodied fleet in the region at under five years throughout 2019, with corresponding competitive fuel efficiency, reliability and cabin comfort benefits," he said at the signing ceremony with Airbus for the purchase order here today.

Malindo Air - Fallout between top owners Indon billionaire Rusdi & M'sia's NADI

PETALING JAYA - More than a year into its partnership to form the country’s newest airline, Malindo Air, owners Indonesian billionaire Rusdi Kirana and National Aerospace Defence & Industries Bhd (Nadi) are said to have fallen out, with talk of a possible exit of Nadi from the business.

Sources say that the bone of contention between the two is to do with the leadership and management of Malindo Air.

It is understood that Nadi, which has largely been content with letting Rusdi steer the airline, is now keen to appoint its own candidate to helm it. Rusdi, however, is adamant that Chandran Rama Muthy, his former personal assistant remains as CEO of the airline.

This difference of opinion, among others, has led to the possibility of Nadi selling its stake in Malindo Air.

Checks with Companies Commission Malaysia however found that the shareholding in the company, Malindo Airways Sdn Bhd, has not changed.

The documents which were last updated on October 2012, showed that Nadi holds a 50.99% stake in Malindo Airways, its president Tan Sri Ahmad Johan one share, Rusdi another share while his Lion Grup holds the remaining 48.99% stake.

Rusdi did not respond to a request for comment.

China Airlines and Tiger Air to Set Up Budget Carrier in Taiwan

SINGAPORE: Singapore budget carrier Tigerair and Taiwan's China Airlines said Monday they would set up a new no-frills airline to tap growing demand for cheap travel in Asia.

Tigerair Taiwan will have a paid-up capital of Tw$2 billion ($67.5 million), with the Singapore-based carrier holding a 10 percent stake, the two airlines said in a statement.

China Airlines, Taiwan's leading airline by fleet size, will hold the remaining 90 percent.

Tigerair said in the statement ..
China Airlines, Taiwan's leading airline by fleet size, will hold the remaining 90 percent.

Tigerair said in the statement the new airline will be managed as a standalone entity but will utilise its website as well as sales and distribution platforms.

"The new JV (joint venture) will allow us to extend our presence into the new untapped markets of Taiwan, Japan and Korea," said Koay Peng Yen, group chief executive of Tigerair.

Sun Hung-Hsiang, chairman of China Airline said: "China Airlines' knowledge of the Taiwan market coupled with Tigerair's expertise in the no-frills sector should stimulate demand in the civil aviation market here."

The formation of the new carrier comes just a month after TransAsia Airways, Taiwan's first private airline, secured government approval to set up a so-far unnamed budget subsidiary.
Demand for discount flying has been rising in Asia. Currently 12 foreign budget airlines, including Malaysia-based AirAsia and Japan's Peach Aviation, offer services to and from Taiwan.

Singapore's Tigerair, which was previously known as Tiger Airways before a rebranding exercise this year, has been looking for expansion opportunities in Asia.
Last year, it bought a 33 percent stake in beleaguered Indonesian carrier PT Mandala Airlines. In March, it raised more than Sg$297 million ($237 million) to fund its Asian expansion plans.

Its shares rose 2.00 percent to Sg$0.51 in mid-day trade Monday after the announcement.

This is your captain speaking… and his daughter, too: Cathay double-act are Asia's first

Zoe Davies was walking on air yesterday after a lovely day out with her father - at the controls of a Cathay Pacific flight to Manila.

The 35-year-old was first officer while father Stuart, 64, was captain, making them probably the only father-and-daughter team flying commercial Boeing 747s in Asia.

"The cabin crew thought it was a joke when they saw we had the same surname and I said I was his daughter," said Zoe. "The only way to prove it was to give him a kiss."

Zoe was just nine months old when Stuart joined Cathay. Now, after 35 years with the company, he is preparing for retirement next July.

"When she was three years old, she just picked up my hat and put it on her head," he recalled. "I asked, 'What are you going to do when you grow up?' She said, 'I'm going to be a Cathay pilot'.

"She got a private licence first - nothing to do with me. Then she said she wanted to do it as a job, and I put her through a flying school, which was very expensive. But she stood by it and I'm very pleased. It's been worth every penny."

Zoe, who also trained at the British Royal Air Force's University Air Squadron, has been living her childhood dream for five years now.

She said: "I wasn't trying to follow my dad. I just think the job is good."

She swapped shifts with a colleague so she could pilot the return flight to the Philippines yesterday with her father. It was the second time the two of them had controlled a flight between them. On another occasion, they shared the duties with two colleagues on a long-haul flight.

Zoe said it was "a fun day out, spending time with Dad".
And she got the thumbs up from her captain yesterday, who praised her "nice landing" and "good sector" for the Manila-Hong Kong flight.

He added: "I like flying with her because it's the only time she has to call me 'captain' or 'sir'. She can't call me 'Dad'. That's not allowed."
